At the heart of the Middle Tennessee Writing Project is a month-long invitational institute where teachers are involved in intensive learning experiences based on writing, reading professional development literature, and sharing their own inquiry-driven best practices. This serves as a training ground to develop Teacher Consultants who go back into their schools, districts, and the Middle Tennessee area, continuing the model of “teachers teaching teachers.”
MTWP believes that the only way to change the way writing is taught and learned in Middle Tennessee is for teachers to lead the way. The summer institute empowers teachers to develop their roles as professionals and to continually refine their own teaching. The summer institute is merely a springboard for continued involvement in this professional development community.
The Invitational Summer Institute meets Monday through Thursday during the month of June. Two pre-institute days and three follow-up meetings during the following school year are also required.
Tuition is covered by grants from the NWP and MTSU. Teachers cover travel costs to and from campus and incidental expenses associated with participation. Participants receive 3 hours of graduate credit in either Curriculum & Instruction-Elementary or English and a $500 stipend.
