Oct 13 2009, 7:50 PM
heather_adkins: Welcome to tonight’s chat session. Tonight’s topic is the National Day on Writing on October 20th. How do you plan to celebrate as a writer? As a teacher of writing?
Oct 13 2009, 7:57 PM
lmhatcher: Hi, Heather, I am doing a test message here.
Oct 13 2009, 7:57 PM
heather_adkins: Hi Linda!
Oct 13 2009, 7:58 PM
lmhatcher: Hey! Now….on to the topic. I am actually scared b/c I am the leader of our school’s participation, and I don’t really KNOW what we are doing! Our principal has been ultra cool about it, as usual, and has said we can offer prizes for contests, etc.
Oct 13 2009, 7:59 PM
lmhatcher: Here are the possibilities that have been discussed. Keep in mind we have been off for fall break for two weeks, go back Monday, and the NDW is Tuesday.
Oct 13 2009, 8:00 PM
frazierje: Hi there! I will be right back. I must put my son to bed.
Oct 13 2009, 8:00 PM
heather_adkins: Hi Jennifer.
Oct 13 2009, 8:01 PM
lmhatcher: (Sorry, I keep hitting return, thinking I am about to start a bullet list.) Anyway…ideas our “Stylus” (literary mag) kids have thought of: prompts (our principal is granting us homeroom for Tuesday to do what we want with NDW); books in the library about writing/writers; a gallery of writing in our front lobby cases; reading something about writing over the intercom each day of next week. I would also like us to submit to the national gallery that you can see about online.
Oct 13 2009, 8:02 PM
heather_adkins: Wow, those are ambitious plans. Do you have the manpower to help make all of that happen?
Oct 13 2009, 8:03 PM
frazierje: I am back. Sorry
Oct 13 2009, 8:04 PM
lmhatcher: We have about 40 kids in the “Stylus,” including a powerhouse of a young man, who is a phenomenal talent with what I guess would be called slam style work. He did an announcement on our “Pride TV” about it before we went on break and really wants to do a lot with this. Other “Stylus” kids will help in any way we ask.
Oct 13 2009, 8:05 PM
frazierje: This is not an excuse, but from the flu hitting my house and fall break, I have not even thought of Tuesday. OMG
Oct 13 2009, 8:05 PM
heather_adkins: How are you planning to do the gallery in the building? That sounds neat.
Oct 13 2009, 8:06 PM
heather_adkins: We’re facing the same thing with fall break. It has made it hard to get something going school-wide.
Oct 13 2009, 8:06 PM
lmhatcher: Fortunately, I did do some pre-planning for two weeks before we went on fall break b/c I knew we then only had that one day. I enlisted the librarians and announced it to our English dept. so everyone could feel they had a chance at giving ideas. Per the gallery, there are two long glassed-in display cases, currently dominated by art. I am going to ask Mrs. Johnson, a “gets it” person, if we can claim one for writing for this event…and from now on.
Oct 13 2009, 8:07 PM
frazierje: My two boys and I had the flu before the break. It is a poor excuse.
Oct 13 2009, 8:07 PM
heather_adkins: it’s life though, Jennifer
Oct 13 2009, 8:08 PM
frazierje: This is off topic, but what is the NWP annual meeting? Is this open to us?
Oct 13 2009, 8:08 PM
lmhatcher: No, I don’t think the flu is an excuse, J! Lord, I had some version of it that knocked me to my knees for a MONTH, but no fever so I just crawled to work.
Oct 13 2009, 8:08 PM
frazierje: lol
Oct 13 2009, 8:09 PM
heather_adkins: The annual meeting is site planning stuff. It consists of meetings for specific areas of site development. I have to go to Tech Liaison meetings, for example.
Oct 13 2009, 8:09 PM
lmhatcher: Glad yall are better, tho Jenn. Be sure to look at the website about the National Day of Writing, too. I am interested in hearing about the meeting, too.
Oct 13 2009, 8:09 PM
heather_adkins: It doesn’t really touch classroom practices.
Oct 13 2009, 8:09 PM
frazierje: My principal is good. He will allow me to do whatever on Tuesday. I am over the writing committee. I think I will email the members for ideas on Tuesday.
Oct 13 2009, 8:10 PM
lmhatcher: My principal reminded me to just “keep it fun,” so I think we may do a choice of writing prompts OR may do a collective story in each homeroom. What do yall think (we have 30 min. homerooms)?
Oct 13 2009, 8:11 PM
frazierje: We were going to have t-shirts made for the teachers that would be worn one day a month on certain days, to celebrate writing. My pto contact slacked off. I need to get with her. Money is always an issue.
Oct 13 2009, 8:11 PM
heather_adkins: I’d be very careful with prompts. Keep it fun is good advice. It’s a Celebration!
Oct 13 2009, 8:11 PM
lmhatcher: Yeah, they get bashed over the head with prompts. What would be a good, organized way to use that 30 minutes on Tuesday that IS fun?
Oct 13 2009, 8:12 PM
frazierje: I agree, I would stay clear of prompts. Would you believe I haven’t used one yet in my classes? Hm
Oct 13 2009, 8:12 PM
heather_adkins: Maybe a mini marathon? I think that is what I will do in my classes Tuesday, and hopefully some other classes will join in.
Oct 13 2009, 8:12 PM
lmhatcher: We want to collect their efforts for judging for the prizes. Maybe they could pick their genre and ……what?
Oct 13 2009, 8:12 PM
heather_adkins: A collective or pass around story woud be fun, too.
Oct 13 2009, 8:13 PM
lmhatcher: Wow, I just put an entry in here and it disappeared.
Oct 13 2009, 8:13 PM
lmhatcher: Again?
Oct 13 2009, 8:13 PM
frazierje: What about one of the fun activities we did during the summer? The teacher could read a couple of pieces, then the students go around the room and record their thoughts.
Oct 13 2009, 8:14 PM
heather_adkins: I did 5 word stories with my juniors early in the year and they LOVED it. I started with 5 words, which they wrote and then added their own 5 to. Then pass and add 5 words, etc.
Oct 13 2009, 8:14 PM
heather_adkins: It’s different because they have to stop mid sentence, mid thought…
Oct 13 2009, 8:14 PM
frazierje: I like that, Heather. I am taking my students to the outdoor classroom to write.
Oct 13 2009, 8:15 PM
heather_adkins: me too if the weather is nice.
Oct 13 2009, 8:16 PM
heather_adkins: Linda I want to go back to your gallery idea. How are you managing it? Are you moderating submissions? Letting everything in? Does the case protect the work from others messing with it?
Oct 13 2009, 8:16 PM
heather_adkins: There are so many things like that to consider with high schoolers, so I’m always interested in how others handle it.
Oct 13 2009, 8:16 PM
frazierje: What about over the speaker, you played famous poets reading a piece? I have a collection of them, but I bet you could find some online. Frost is a great one. the teachers could give the students a hard copy and they could follow along as Frost recites his own poem to the school.
Oct 13 2009, 8:17 PM
heather_adkins: That’s a good idea. Or what if different teachers read their favorite pieces? I know my kids get really excited about a workk when they see me excited about it.
Oct 13 2009, 8:18 PM
frazierje: Linda, are you using the gallary on the national website? Oh, on tuesday - we could send writing to one another and give feedback via internet.
Oct 13 2009, 8:18 PM
lmhatcher: Okay, I am back in the saddle. I had to do a popout to see this continue (?) Still learning. Anyway, I do like the idea of the five word stories and think that is the route I will take. Per the gallery, it is a new idea, so what we will probably do is make it a project of “The Stylus” and let them pick the items to appear. I do want teachers to have some options to submit student work, too. The case is locked and glass, so they will have to take a hammer to mess with it, ha, ha (?)
Oct 13 2009, 8:19 PM
lmhatcher: I used the national gallery as inspiration and want to revisit it so we can model our CHS gallery after it.
Oct 13 2009, 8:19 PM
heather_adkins: You know you can create a local gallery on the national Gallery site. Like a subpage
Oct 13 2009, 8:19 PM
heather_adkins: We could even do one for MTWP.
Oct 13 2009, 8:19 PM
frazierje: Oh, okay. I am thinking about making a class in the national gallary.
Oct 13 2009, 8:19 PM
lmhatcher: Jenn, I like the idea of a famous poet reading a work; we have a phenom collection just in our libarary.
Oct 13 2009, 8:20 PM
frazierje: I played Frost tonight to make sure it was what I wanted, and I had goosebumps.
Oct 13 2009, 8:20 PM
lmhatcher: Heather, please give me ideas on specifics on the 5-word story idea on logistics since we will be doing this project in all our homerooms among 90+ teachers and 1400 students!
Oct 13 2009, 8:21 PM
heather_adkins: One thing to consider is time. It takes a few days to get confirmation back when creating a local gallery. Then all the pieces have to be submitted and approved (by you). It goes live on Tuesday, but I don’t know when the deadline to submit is…
Oct 13 2009, 8:21 PM
lmhatcher: I can see that I need to get out of vacation mode and get my rear to school this Friday to work on all of this. We still have Monday, but it will be chaos to begin with.
Oct 13 2009, 8:22 PM
heather_adkins: I think I used “When I looked at the” as the first 5 words. It can be anything. The trick is just that each person can write only 5 words before passing it on.
Oct 13 2009, 8:22 PM
frazierje: Are we speaking about the gallery that looks like a card catalog?
Oct 13 2009, 8:22 PM
heather_adkins: I am.
Oct 13 2009, 8:23 PM
frazierje: What do you mean it goes live?
Oct 13 2009, 8:23 PM
lmhatcher: I don’t think we will get our gallery up at CHS until after we do the day of writing. Okay…it is all coming to me now. We will gather the contributions and let Eng. teachers judge the best of each homeroom. And yes, I was speaking of the card catalog looking one per national and speaking of creating a glassed-in gallery at our school, too.
Oct 13 2009, 8:23 PM
heather_adkins: I mean you can”t see any of the pieces until 10/20.
Oct 13 2009, 8:23 PM
frazierje: oh, okay
Oct 13 2009, 8:25 PM
lmhatcher: Hmmm…maybe they could do the 5 words thing as a homeroom and we will give donuts to the best homeroom. Then, they can go to the library for more possibilities from an individual entry point of view and we could have different prizes for those winners.
Oct 13 2009, 8:25 PM
frazierje: Okay, so you write the first 5 words down, then pass it to a kid, they write the next 5, pass it on.
Oct 13 2009, 8:25 PM
heather_adkins: Another thing to think about, Linda, is the criteria you might use for “judging.” In a writing celebration you might not value the same things you would in academic writing. You don’t want it to beccome about grades, but about the joy of writing.
Oct 13 2009, 8:26 PM
lmhatcher: Have either of you thought to enlist the library as a partner and also of extending it beyond one day to all of next week like we have done? And Heather, you are right about making sure it remains celebratory, as they are abused with rubrics and prompts and robotic writing ENOUGH! What would you suggest on picking for prizes, though?
Oct 13 2009, 8:26 PM
frazierje: What if you did it by room. Class one starts the story with 10 words, then take it to another classroom. The students would have to work together to come up with the words. At the end of the time, make copies of story for homeroom teacher to share with their kids.
Oct 13 2009, 8:26 PM
heather_adkins: That’s right, Jennifer. Keep it going for awhile and then let them know when time is drawing to a close.
Oct 13 2009, 8:28 PM
heather_adkins: That might really be really good for younger kids, Jennifer.
Oct 13 2009, 8:28 PM
lmhatcher: That sounds exciting….but complicated for homeroom teachers, some of whom will be disgruntled about having to participate with this. I think having it contained to each homeroom might work better in our school culture.
Oct 13 2009, 8:28 PM
frazierje: I am elem.
Oct 13 2009, 8:29 PM
lmhatcher: We had competitions among homerooms for best Homecoming door, and for a classroom set of donuts (LOL), people went all out to try. Back to your idea, Jenn, I like it for elem.
Oct 13 2009, 8:29 PM
heather_adkins: Linda, why not just draw randomly from all submitted entries? That way there’s an incentive, but all work is valued.
Oct 13 2009, 8:29 PM
frazierje: thanks, and I like heather’s idea
Oct 13 2009, 8:30 PM
frazierje: Random is good and fun
Oct 13 2009, 8:30 PM
lmhatcher: I rather like that, b/c I see your point that judgment of writing is the very reason so many people have sadly given up their joy in the actual writing!
Oct 13 2009, 8:31 PM
heather_adkins: And really, who wants to “grade” papers on top of what they are already doing? Random keeps the other teachers on your side.
Oct 13 2009, 8:32 PM
lmhatcher: Wow…I am SO glad I joined this chat tonight! You just popped my eyes open about the horror of adding to our already toppling towers of papers! LOL!
Oct 13 2009, 8:32 PM
frazierje: The students may actually work harder at something because they may be nervous about getting picked randomly. Does that make sense?
Oct 13 2009, 8:33 PM
heather_adkins: I know dealing with paperloads is something you struggle with…it’s all about doing wonderful things without you having to work harder.
Oct 13 2009, 8:33 PM
lmhatcher: Yes, I do like the random idea. It all just needs to be fun and EASY on everyone, b/c we are going to be bombarded next week getting back into the cruel grind!
Oct 13 2009, 8:33 PM
heather_adkins: Well, and kids who don’t see themselves as writers still have a chance.
Oct 13 2009, 8:34 PM
frazierje: Good Point
Oct 13 2009, 8:34 PM
heather_adkins: What prizes do you have lined up?
Oct 13 2009, 8:35 PM
lmhatcher: On a positive note about the outcome of MTWP, I have been able to do exciting and fun activities about writing with much less stress than ever before. And that is such a valid point about giving everyone a chance. I firmly believe EVERYONE IS A WRITER! and I want to be a catalyst to help others see that. Oh…good news; I get to do writer’s workshop on extended contract two days a week starting next week! As I said, our principal so gets it. Prizes: I don’t know…I will be talking to our principal Friday
Oct 13 2009, 8:35 PM
frazierje: I just had an idea. I have made my 5th graders official stalking sentences licenses. Tuesday, I could set up a stalking mission.
Oct 13 2009, 8:36 PM
heather_adkins: See if you can make them writing related…notebooks, book store giftcards….whatever.
Oct 13 2009, 8:36 PM
heather_adkins: Go on, Jennifer….that sounds interesting.
Oct 13 2009, 8:36 PM
lmhatcher: I love that! It would need to be tweaked for HS b/c “stalking” actually happens at this age.
Oct 13 2009, 8:37 PM
lmhatcher: Love the idea of making gifts writing related. I bought some coolio writer’s notebooks at Office Max; could also do Buckhead gift cards, as they have a writer’s night that aforementioned slam poet boy has read at twice now.
Oct 13 2009, 8:38 PM
lmhatcher: Jenn, as Heather said, I would like to hear more about your sentence stalking idea.
Oct 13 2009, 8:38 PM
frazierje: Yes, I have made it legal to be stalkers. They had to take a sentence test. I already had the cards made. So, you know, instead of a driver’s license, they were awarded oss cards. they love them. I have them stalk sentences and bring them to me to share with the class.
Oct 13 2009, 8:38 PM
lmhatcher: Fun.
Oct 13 2009, 8:38 PM
frazierje: I show some sentences of the Elmo. They have to give the source. We talk about what makes the sentence a stalk-worthy sentence.
Oct 13 2009, 8:39 PM
frazierje: It is fun. I have been stalking my own, and i post them in my doorway - thanks jeff anderson
Oct 13 2009, 8:40 PM
heather_adkins: Very neat.
Oct 13 2009, 8:40 PM
frazierje: Linda, my kids love the pen/highter combos and the stickynote pens.
Oct 13 2009, 8:40 PM
heather_adkins: Mine have a log for beautiful sentences they find while reading in reading workshop.
Oct 13 2009, 8:40 PM
lmhatcher: We have done something you might also like, Jenn. I keep poster boards available and when someone shares an awesome statement or quote, we clip it up right away. Yeah, Jeff Anderson has inspired me a great deal also. Have you read that other guy per inquiry based projects? That has transformed my teaching practices.
Oct 13 2009, 8:41 PM
lmhatcher: A log, Heather? In their own journals, or as a class?
Oct 13 2009, 8:42 PM
heather_adkins: It’s a handout they keep in their folder. They can reference it during their own writing.
Oct 13 2009, 8:42 PM
frazierje: No, I haven’t. I do like the posting right away. Heather, I love that idea - it ties in the reading.
Oct 13 2009, 8:42 PM
lmhatcher: So, they get to choose their own beautiful sentences, or do you all talk about specific ones as a class and write those in?
Oct 13 2009, 8:43 PM
heather_adkins: they are all reading different things, so they are all different sentences!
Oct 13 2009, 8:44 PM
frazierje: I do have a favorite word wall. I also have a sunken words board. (ship and all) Any words that are no longer permitted in writing is sunk. ie. Once upon a time
Oct 13 2009, 8:44 PM
lmhatcher: So, you integrate reader’s workshop w/ writer’s workshop? How do you structure that? I mean…do they get to read anything they choose, or from specific choices; for how long; etc.
Oct 13 2009, 8:44 PM
lmhatcher: Jennifer, that is too cute per the ship idea.
Oct 13 2009, 8:45 PM
heather_adkins: Linda, it’s a little complicated for this format. I’ll email you in the next day or so with what I am doing.
Oct 13 2009, 8:46 PM
heather_adkins: Let me steer us in a different direction for a minute. I’m hearing about school-wide announncements, having the same activity across the school, writing marathons within the class period….all neat ideas.
Oct 13 2009, 8:46 PM
frazierje: thx. Today, a student was reading a story to me, and he threw in once upon a time, I grabbed my head and chest and screamed. I stopped everything - really dramatic - and we had to revisit the sunken list. I had too much fun.
Oct 13 2009, 8:46 PM
lmhatcher: Thanks so much: I had wanted to dig further into reader’s workshop more. Quick sidenote on a successful event we did that you all may wish to try. The librarian selected a WIDE variety of books in our library appropriate to honors or regulars and then my kids got to go to a “book fair” type thing to select outside reading.
Oct 13 2009, 8:46 PM
heather_adkins: But what (if anything) are you planning to do on Tuesday as a WRITER?
Oct 13 2009, 8:47 PM
frazierje: I am planning to take my students to the outdoor classroom - its covered - and write with my kids. No conferencing - we all write and share.
Oct 13 2009, 8:47 PM
lmhatcher: Me personally: write a poem that was born when I found out today an old friend had died last weekend and I missed the funeral. As a teacher in class: the five words idea.
Oct 13 2009, 8:48 PM
lmhatcher: As coordinator of NDW for our school: go to school Friday and get IN GEAR! I think we will do the per HR 5-word stories…that will be hysterical. Do you think involve the HR teacher in the writing?
Oct 13 2009, 8:48 PM
frazierje: It sure would be nice if i could get an author in to visit.
Oct 13 2009, 8:48 PM
heather_adkins: I am going to join in my classes’ marathon. I am also looking forward to seeing my piece in the National Gallery (I was asked to submit by NWP!! Very excited!).
Oct 13 2009, 8:49 PM
lmhatcher: Heather: what marathon and what piece? I love that for you!
Oct 13 2009, 8:49 PM
frazierje: Very cool
Oct 13 2009, 8:50 PM
heather_adkins: It’s a memoir I wrote over the summer. I posted it on the eAnthology and then in August was approached by the curators for the NWP gallery about submitting it.
Oct 13 2009, 8:50 PM
lmhatcher: Congratulations BTW. Was it the piece about living next to family that you read us? I have thought of that piece often. I loved it.
Oct 13 2009, 8:50 PM
frazierje: I look forward to reading it.
Oct 13 2009, 8:51 PM
heather_adkins: No, it’s about epilepsy. I’m really proud of it.
Oct 13 2009, 8:51 PM
frazierje: Heather, you are amazing.
Oct 13 2009, 8:52 PM
heather_adkins: As for the marathon, I’m going to have my kids do one like we did. I have 90 minute blocks, so we should have time to write, share and then do an author’s chair when we get back to class.
Oct 13 2009, 8:52 PM
lmhatcher: I look forward to reading it, also. I love pieces that are what I call “change the world” writing: meaning, by sharing your hardest truths in life, you make the world a better place in the having shared with others they are not alone in that situation. I would like to work on my piece about mom’s mental illness and do the same thing to share it with the world
Oct 13 2009, 8:52 PM
heather_adkins: Maybe some other classes will join us.
Oct 13 2009, 8:53 PM
lmhatcher: I have not done the marathons w/ my kids and I need to. They are doing amazing work in our regular writer’s workshop. Think I’ll do the marathons like 1x a mo. What do you do, Heather?
Oct 13 2009, 8:54 PM
frazierje: Marathons are good. I have already told my kids that we will do one soon. Tuesday could be a good time.
Oct 13 2009, 8:54 PM
heather_adkins: I haven’t done one yet. i think they are a “pull it out only occasionally” kind of thing.
Oct 13 2009, 8:54 PM
lmhatcher: Errr…I am thinking MONDAY would be a good time, LOL, since I have absolutely NO idea what we will be doing otherwise! Then we could do author’s chair on Tuesday. Sold.
Oct 13 2009, 8:54 PM
frazierje: Oh,my kids could write a short play and they could do reader’s theatre for a younger class - behind my big fake t.v.
Oct 13 2009, 8:55 PM
heather_adkins: I have a friend who runs marathons…he does a max of 2 a year so he doesn’t tax his body too much. I think the same applies to the writing ones.
Oct 13 2009, 8:56 PM
lmhatcher: Ha, ha, ha…you kept the big TV, huh? I thought you should! Anyway, that is probably true that a marathon each semester or each nine weeks at max would be good. We missed the first nine, so this would be a great opp to do it this next nine.
Oct 13 2009, 8:56 PM
heather_adkins: Don’t forget about TC-Connect for sharing your own work.
Oct 13 2009, 8:56 PM
lmhatcher: What?
Oct 13 2009, 8:57 PM
heather_adkins: Our discussion board has a place for posting and to responding to other TCs’ writing.
Oct 13 2009, 8:57 PM
frazierje: like what we did this summer?
Oct 13 2009, 8:57 PM
lmhatcher: Oh! I did not recall that and I am glad you reminded me. AT the MTWP site?
Oct 13 2009, 8:58 PM
heather_adkins: Yes. We used that time to get it going, but it’s there for us to use any time. The national one is closed, but the boards on our site are forever!
Oct 13 2009, 8:58 PM
frazierje: Blond - i didn’t realize that.
Oct 13 2009, 8:59 PM
heather_adkins: Yeah, just click on the Info for TCs tab and click on Join an Online Writing Response Group.
Oct 13 2009, 8:59 PM
lmhatcher: I am now in a monthly writer’s group at a coffee house, and it has been so lovely to share work again. Also, Heather, I wish you would do a website of your own to share teacher ideas and tech resources. YOu are such a rich resource!
Oct 13 2009, 9:00 PM
heather_adkins: Thanks I sort of am. Click on the Blog tab on the website. I haven;t been real consistent, but that’s a place for sharing resources!
Oct 13 2009, 9:00 PM
frazierje: Can we all share?
Oct 13 2009, 9:01 PM
lmhatcher: BTW, Heather, there was a teacher at TCTE (where I went, preventing my attendance at the MTWP conf.) who has done that very thing. I will send you the link to see her work. Speaking of the conference, how many attended and how did it go?
Oct 13 2009, 9:01 PM
heather_adkins: Sure. Email me if there are ideas you want featured. I’ll either work from that list and//or invite you to guest autor.
Oct 13 2009, 9:01 PM
heather_adkins: It was really great. Not sure on the exact numbers, but I would guess around 100.
Oct 13 2009, 9:02 PM
lmhatcher: I am glad it was successful; I was a bit worried since several people who wanted to go to it were at TCTE. I hope to participate next year.
Oct 13 2009, 9:02 PM
