asakich: Welcome to our first professional chat in a series on Writer’s Workshop. Tonight we will be discussing launching the workshop. I am excited to learn how writer’s workshop is working in everyone’s classroom! We will have the chance to share our successes and ask each other for advice. I will be guiding the discussion. Guidelines and a link to FAQ for the chat are posted on the log-in page.

Sep 8 2009, 7:59 PM

asakich: I’m Allison Sakich, Teacher Consultant and Co-Technology Director for MTWP. I teach second grade at FRA in Nashville and am in the process of launching a WW in my classroom.

Sep 8 2009, 8:01 PM

frazierje: Can you read my words?

Sep 8 2009, 8:01 PM

frazierje: Okay, just had to make sure.

Sep 8 2009, 8:01 PM

asakich: I can read you Jennifer.

Sep 8 2009, 8:02 PM

heather_adkins: Hi, I’m Heather Adkins, Tech Liaison along with Allison for MTWP. I teach 11th grade English and AP Lit at Gallatin High School.

Sep 8 2009, 8:03 PM

asakich: How did you all begin your Writer’s Workshop?

Sep 8 2009, 8:03 PM

frazierje: Hi everyone. I am Jennifer Frazier. I teach 5th grade language arts at Lascassas Elem.

Sep 8 2009, 8:04 PM

heather_adkins: I really just started with immersing students with writing-Quick writes, writing surveys, written responses to literature we were reading.

Sep 8 2009, 8:04 PM

mchenryj: Hi, I’m Jill McHenry. I teach 5th grade at Rock Springs Elem.

Sep 8 2009, 8:05 PM

mchenryj: I started with a lot of community building activities. I have also done a lot of Quick Writes.

Sep 8 2009, 8:05 PM

asakich: I’m in the process of launching WW in my class and focus heavily on procedures and routines in the beginning.

Sep 8 2009, 8:05 PM

frazierje: I started by using Aimee B. story telling. I took notes in my notebook, then the kids dove into their notebooks. (excuse my typos)

Sep 8 2009, 8:06 PM

mchenryj: I have also modeled writing by showing the students my own writer’s notebook. They were so amazed that I actually had one!

Sep 8 2009, 8:06 PM

frazierje: Me too - procedures, quick writes, set up our two sided notebook. I teach a 2 1/2 hour block

Sep 8 2009, 8:07 PM

heather_adkins: Jill what are some of the Quick Writes you use? Mine are getting kind of stale.

Sep 8 2009, 8:09 PM

mchenryj: I use a lot of picture books that have what I consider to be interesting techniques. We talk about these techniques and try them out in our own writing. Have you read the book that we had for our writing camps called, “Writing Towards Home?”

Sep 8 2009, 8:09 PM

heather_adkins: Did you like Buckner’s book Jennifer?

Sep 8 2009, 8:09 PM

mchenryj: It does have a lot of neat quick writes esp. for older students.

Sep 8 2009, 8:09 PM

heather_adkins: NO…is that a Georgia Heard?

Sep 8 2009, 8:10 PM

mchenryj: Yes, I think it would be great for you.

Sep 8 2009, 8:10 PM

frazierje: Yep, I love her books. I also love Heard’s book. It is great - especially for myself to write. I too have been using mentor texts.

Sep 8 2009, 8:10 PM

heather_adkins: I need to find that one. I’m doing the writing club, too, and so a lot of the kids are getting me and my quick writes for the 3rd time!

Sep 8 2009, 8:10 PM

asakich: Are there other go-to WW books that you all use? I love And With a Light Touch for younger kids.

Sep 8 2009, 8:11 PM

Terah: okay guys, I think I’m finally on here!

Sep 8 2009, 8:11 PM

mchenryj: Heather,I can relate! I looped with my last group and half of them had attended my writing clubs and camps for several years. I was out of ideas!

Sep 8 2009, 8:11 PM

frazierje: This is to Jill - did I meet you at a meeting the other day - Siegle Middle?

Sep 8 2009, 8:11 PM

heather_adkins: hey Terah!

Sep 8 2009, 8:12 PM

mchenryj: Yes, I was at that inservice! Have you tried that “I’m Talking…” Poem? My students loved it!

Sep 8 2009, 8:13 PM

mchenryj: Hi Terah!!!

Sep 8 2009, 8:13 PM

Terah: hey! so my question is how do you match what you’re teaching in your writing workshop with the standards that you’re supposed to be following with per say, your school’s curriculum guide? it was easy to teach punctuation (No, David!, etc.) but it’s hard to know which of my wonderful books is BEST for each standard, you know?

Sep 8 2009, 8:13 PM

frazierje: Today, I read three poems from a Cricket magazine. We compared them - what the authors did similar and differently - then they wrote. It was great.

Sep 8 2009, 8:13 PM

heather_adkins: I really like Tracy Rosewarne’s _Purposeful Writing_. I’m modeling my 11th grade lit class after what she does. It’s nonfiction, a lot of reposnding, and then culminating finished pieces based on the unit of study.

Sep 8 2009, 8:14 PM

heather_adkins: What’s the I’m Talking poem?

Sep 8 2009, 8:14 PM

frazierje: My students loved the “I’m talking…” poems and will do more. It has become a center in my room and poems are posted on the wall. This year my wall is a great friend.

Sep 8 2009, 8:14 PM

frazierje: Go Jill.:>

Sep 8 2009, 8:14 PM

asakich: I think I should start a list of books. I’ll compile them! I’d like to know about the talking poem too. Then, we can discuss Terah’s standards question.

Sep 8 2009, 8:14 PM

Terah: I love the idea of comparing those poems…I never think to do more than two…what age was that?

Sep 8 2009, 8:15 PM

frazierje: My students are 5th graders. The magazine is for children 8 to something more. My 4th grader gets it. It is wonderful. I love it more than he does.

Sep 8 2009, 8:16 PM

mchenryj: It’s a poem template type thing where the students think of a word they can describe. Then they create the poem based on other words that describe the subject…

Sep 8 2009, 8:16 PM

mchenryj: Ex: I’m talking LOUD!

Sep 8 2009, 8:16 PM

frazierje: I’m talking small, I’m talking tiny, invisible

Sep 8 2009, 8:16 PM

mchenryj: I’m talking BOOm! Explosive! Tremendous!

Sep 8 2009, 8:17 PM

frazierje: Heather, I can scan it and shoot it to you tomorrow - gmail

Sep 8 2009, 8:17 PM

asakich: That sounds really neat. I want to try it with my students too.

Sep 8 2009, 8:17 PM

frazierje: Great adjective lists come from it

Sep 8 2009, 8:17 PM

mchenryj: I was going to say I could email it to you all.

Sep 8 2009, 8:17 PM

heather_adkins: I love that! Jennifer, it sounds like a great way to work on the vocabulary you presented in your TIP.

Sep 8 2009, 8:17 PM

Terah: sounds good-email away! ha.

Sep 8 2009, 8:18 PM

Terah: we need a list of emails for when we find something really great like this…we just scan, email, send the link, etc.

Sep 8 2009, 8:18 PM

mchenryj: It’s really simple, but you would be surprised at what great writing you will get. YOu could also use it in other subject areas.

Sep 8 2009, 8:18 PM

frazierje: Yes, it is. I have also been using my word wall.

Sep 8 2009, 8:18 PM

Terah: I’m also doing an author study right now, do you guys do that often during your workshops?

Sep 8 2009, 8:18 PM

heather_adkins: You can always send it to info@middletnwritingproject.org and I can forward it out.

Sep 8 2009, 8:18 PM

frazierje: I want to, but it will be a first for me.

Sep 8 2009, 8:19 PM

mchenryj: Heather-okay, awesome

Sep 8 2009, 8:19 PM

heather_adkins: I haven’t yet, but would like to.

Sep 8 2009, 8:19 PM

asakich: I’m going to do an author study to help launch the workshop too. I’m going much sloooower this year. It’s working better.

Sep 8 2009, 8:19 PM

mchenryj: I haven’t done a big author study before. Only really used a few books from the same author to compare and contrast, critique, etc

Sep 8 2009, 8:19 PM

frazierje: I made my students “Sentence Stalker Licenses” They love it. They are legal stalkers - of sentences, that is.

Sep 8 2009, 8:20 PM

asakich: Does anyone have advice for Terah about linking WW to standards?

Sep 8 2009, 8:20 PM

frazierje: They had to take sentence writing test - instead of a drivers test

Sep 8 2009, 8:21 PM

frazierje: Mechanically Inclined - he hits grammar standards. (Jeff Anderson)

Sep 8 2009, 8:21 PM

heather_adkins: love his book

Sep 8 2009, 8:21 PM

frazierje: Yep - amazon loves me

Sep 8 2009, 8:22 PM

mchenryj: well, i think it can be overwhelming to try to find just the perfect book to teach each standard. I look at the books I have and try to pick out skills that relate to the standards.

Sep 8 2009, 8:22 PM

asakich: What grade(s) does he write for? I’m familiar it, but it seems like it might be a middle school/hs book?

Sep 8 2009, 8:22 PM

Terah: yes, I’m starting to realize that Jill…just work with great literature and it usually works out!

Sep 8 2009, 8:22 PM

Terah: okay, gotta run, but this is really a great resource. I hope I can do it again. good luck you guys!

Sep 8 2009, 8:23 PM

frazierje: Terah, are you worried about writing standards? I think his ideas can be stretched to upper grade levels. It has changed my son’s 7th grade teachers teaching style.

Sep 8 2009, 8:23 PM

asakich: Thanks for chatting Terah!

Sep 8 2009, 8:23 PM

heather_adkins: someone mentioned at ISI this summer a book that catalogued tons of picture books by the skills they could be used to teach.

Sep 8 2009, 8:23 PM

heather_adkins: bye!!

Sep 8 2009, 8:23 PM

mchenryj: Bye Terah

Sep 8 2009, 8:23 PM

frazierje: Bye Terah

Sep 8 2009, 8:23 PM

Terah: well that’s what I need! if you hear of it again definitely email it out!

Sep 8 2009, 8:24 PM

frazierje: I have a list of reading skills and books that go with them - from an article I found.

Sep 8 2009, 8:24 PM

mchenryj: Oh, I do have a book like that also. Of course, you can always find book suggestions on the internet

Sep 8 2009, 8:24 PM

frazierje: Heather, did I send you that article?

Sep 8 2009, 8:24 PM

heather_adkins: I don’t think so.

Sep 8 2009, 8:24 PM

frazierje: Jill, what book is it?

Sep 8 2009, 8:25 PM

frazierje: Finding the right books to read everyday is time consuming. My students love me to read - they beg me.

Sep 8 2009, 8:25 PM

mchenryj: Ummm..I will have to look at school tomorrow. Can’t think of the title?!?!

Sep 8 2009, 8:25 PM

asakich: Was it a Fountas and Portaloupi book? They wrote all the word matters/guided reading books and they have annotated bibliographies in the back.

Sep 8 2009, 8:26 PM

heather_adkins: I thought I had it in the gooogle doc list. Ashley Whitaker told me about it. I’lll email her.

Sep 8 2009, 8:26 PM

mchenryj: Not sure, but I do get a lot of book suggestions from the bibliographies of books I have read

Sep 8 2009, 8:26 PM

asakich: Sounds like a great resource. If you find it I’ll add it to a list from our chat.

Sep 8 2009, 8:27 PM

heather_adkins: Okay, here’s something I’m curious about…how many minutes do you devote to workshop on a typical day?

Sep 8 2009, 8:28 PM

asakich: I’m starting out slow this year. I devote maybe 15 minutes a day (when it will fit into my schedule).

Sep 8 2009, 8:28 PM

asakich: Do you all do WW everyday?

Sep 8 2009, 8:28 PM

frazierje: 1 hour is set for ww and grammar. We have yet to open up a language textbook. We have used the workbook some - scissors too

Sep 8 2009, 8:28 PM

mchenryj: 50 min. writing workshop and then I am lucky to have another 20 minutes where I like to do diff. quickwrite activities

Sep 8 2009, 8:29 PM

heather_adkins: I have my kids for 90 minutes, but for actual writing they still don’t have much stamina.

Sep 8 2009, 8:29 PM

heather_adkins: I’m trying to pull it back in before they stop on their own…20 minutes feel like a victory.

Sep 8 2009, 8:29 PM

frazierje: Sometimes in that hour we have to do some spelling. I just haven’t gotten away from that book yet. I didn’t want to overwhelm myself.

Sep 8 2009, 8:30 PM

mchenryj: Yes, it definitely depends on the writing teachers that they have had in the past as to how long they will write

Sep 8 2009, 8:30 PM

asakich: How do you use your time? Mini-lessons, writing time, quick-writes

Sep 8 2009, 8:30 PM

mchenryj: This is probably the most excited group I have had this early in the school year…pretty cool!

Sep 8 2009, 8:30 PM

frazierje: Okay, I have a mixture of writers and those who are slowly adapting. My big problem is conferencing. There is only one of me and they are needy.

Sep 8 2009, 8:31 PM

frazierje: My kids love my class. THey are pumped to come in. I think some other teachers get jealous.

Sep 8 2009, 8:31 PM

heather_adkins: i’m doing a hybrid readers//writers workshop and they are sooo into the books they chose that i don’t want to mess wit hthat too much!

Sep 8 2009, 8:31 PM

frazierje: Oh, wait, delete that comment. sorry

Sep 8 2009, 8:31 PM

asakich: Julie had some great organizational tips for managing conferences

Sep 8 2009, 8:32 PM

heather_adkins: like what?

Sep 8 2009, 8:32 PM

frazierje: I am for them. I am using the sticky labels. I let them know I have to get to all of them. They just want so much attention.

Sep 8 2009, 8:33 PM

heather_adkins: I LOVE sticky labels!

Sep 8 2009, 8:33 PM

heather_adkins: It’s a system I’m actually using instead of just setting up.

Sep 8 2009, 8:33 PM

mchenryj: Yes, conferencing can be the most frustrating to fit everyone in.

Sep 8 2009, 8:33 PM

frazierje: I use my notes from the labels to help me decide what my next mini-lesson will be.

Sep 8 2009, 8:34 PM

frazierje: I really think if I open it up - I will have kids come in at 7 just to conference.

Sep 8 2009, 8:34 PM

asakich: She had a checklist of sorts she described to me, I wanted to see it in person. It sounded like at the beginning of each day she would briefly check in with her students to see where they were and who needed what. Then, she’d know where everyone was in their pieces and could work with specific kids based on their needs or progress.

Sep 8 2009, 8:34 PM

heather_adkins: One thing I have done that really worked is to do my regualr conferences, but have a space on the board where they can sign up for a fly by conference if it just can’t wait. But they know they are only getting a moment of my time.

Sep 8 2009, 8:35 PM

frazierje: I need a checklist.

Sep 8 2009, 8:35 PM

mchenryj: I once posted a calendar for that where they could sign up for available times

Sep 8 2009, 8:35 PM

mchenryj: They loved that, but of course you have some students who want to conference every day.

Sep 8 2009, 8:36 PM

frazierje: This is off subject, but I posted some kids’ sentences on strips around my door. They are loving it and wanting to show me their good sentences to get theirs posted- jeff anderson

Sep 8 2009, 8:36 PM

asakich: True. We haven’t even gotten into craft or conventions yet in second grade. We

Sep 8 2009, 8:37 PM

heather_adkins: ON my labels I have a few more labels than I have kids in a class. On the extra one I write in names of kids who I know will need more attention, be it for neediness, IEP, behind from absence, etc. That way the extra attention is built in.

Sep 8 2009, 8:37 PM

frazierje: my conventions get hit with Build a sentence, too. I do that as well, Heather - it seems to be working okay.

Sep 8 2009, 8:37 PM

mchenryj: Good idea, Heather!

Sep 8 2009, 8:38 PM

heather_adkins: I need to start adding things to my “Examples of Wonderful Writing” display. It has stayed empty all year due to lack of time.

Sep 8 2009, 8:38 PM

mchenryj: I guess if you build in that extra time for some students it won’t be that hard to fit them in versus if they just come up to you randomly for a conference

Sep 8 2009, 8:39 PM

frazierje: Time is hard to find. The random ones are so hard to turn away. I feel mean, but they have to stay away and allow me to meet with their friends.

Sep 8 2009, 8:39 PM

asakich: I love the idea of labels. Maybe I’ll start using them this year too. How do you use them? On the sheet - stick them to the kids work - put them in a notebook of your own?

Sep 8 2009, 8:40 PM

heather_adkins: Well, you always have to decide if they need your help or if they want your attention. They are two different things!

Sep 8 2009, 8:41 PM

frazierje: I printed my labels with name, date, praise and somehting taught. I fill it out at a conference and later it goes into a notebook, on a card for that student. My students sometimes get a label and make notes and put it in their strategy section - under conference notes

Sep 8 2009, 8:41 PM

heather_adkins: Allison-this is Anna Zabriskie’s invention. you have a sheet of mailing labels for the class where you make your conference notes, and then after looking for common issues among the class, move the labels to a page for each kid in a notebook. that allows you to see his or her progress over time.

Sep 8 2009, 8:42 PM

mchenryj: Yes, I agree. I use a manilla folder with sticky notes attached for each child. I keep my conference notes there. When the sticky notes get full I put them in a notebook that has a page for each child

Sep 8 2009, 8:42 PM

frazierje: Jill, do you use mailing labels? I really love them.

Sep 8 2009, 8:43 PM

asakich: That sounds great! When I start conferenceing

Sep 8 2009, 8:43 PM

asakich: I’ll totally use them.

Sep 8 2009, 8:43 PM

mchenryj: I haven’t for conferencing, but I might consider it now

Sep 8 2009, 8:43 PM

heather_adkins: It keeps you from writing anything twice, but allows you to see your notes in terms of the class and in terms of the child.

Sep 8 2009, 8:43 PM

frazierje: hey, who uses the yellow legal pads?

Sep 8 2009, 8:43 PM

heather_adkins: Hi Kim!

Sep 8 2009, 8:43 PM

frazierje: Hey Kim!

Sep 8 2009, 8:43 PM

asakich: Hello Kim

Sep 8 2009, 8:44 PM

mchenryj: I use the legal pads, but ours are purple, blue, pink, etc.

Sep 8 2009, 8:44 PM

heather_adkins: I do. This is the first year they have worked for me.

Sep 8 2009, 8:44 PM

kcrane: Hi!

Sep 8 2009, 8:44 PM

frazierje: Ah! Can you tell me how you use them?

Sep 8 2009, 8:44 PM

asakich: Do you use them for your notes, or the students write in them?

Sep 8 2009, 8:44 PM

mchenryj: They think they are great. We use them for drafts

Sep 8 2009, 8:44 PM

heather_adkins: that’s how I use them.

Sep 8 2009, 8:45 PM

frazierje: I know the students write on them - when they are writing a piece that will be edited and revised. (right?)

Sep 8 2009, 8:45 PM

frazierje: Okay, I should have said drafts.lol

Sep 8 2009, 8:45 PM

heather_adkins: If nothing else, I think it helps them to see the difference between practicing/experiementing//etc in the notebook and drafting.

Sep 8 2009, 8:46 PM

heather_adkins: There’s a mental shift that happens when they move to different paper.

Sep 8 2009, 8:46 PM

mchenryj: Yes, I also use them sometimes when we are doing timed prompt writings for the writing assessment (fun, fun).

Sep 8 2009, 8:47 PM

mchenryj: I agree Heather, they think it is more fun than writing on regular notebook paper.

Sep 8 2009, 8:47 PM

heather_adkins: Oh, and it makes it easier for them to find their drafts when they turn everything in once a piece is finished.

Sep 8 2009, 8:47 PM

asakich: That’s interesting. I’ve been thinking about that as my students use a “Writing Notebook” that goes along with the handwriting curriculum, but I want them to have freedom to experiment, which seems hard when one of the purposes of the notebook is to practice neat writing.

Sep 8 2009, 8:47 PM

frazierje: Oh! When it was raining and we could not go out and play, I had a student announce that we could go play in our notebooks. I love those moments.

Sep 8 2009, 8:47 PM

asakich: That’s awesome!

Sep 8 2009, 8:48 PM

heather_adkins: Love it! I came back from the Reading Summmit during last block and had left a movie for them…one kid asked if they could just write instead of watching it! I wanted to cry from happiness.

Sep 8 2009, 8:48 PM

frazierje: Some of my darlings forget neat writing.

Sep 8 2009, 8:48 PM

asakich: Are there other materials that you all find indispensable for WW?

Sep 8 2009, 8:48 PM

heather_adkins: KIm how are things going in your class this year?

Sep 8 2009, 8:49 PM

frazierje: Teacher Goosebumps Moments

Sep 8 2009, 8:49 PM

mchenryj: That is cool! I like when I give them extra time to write and some of them cheer

Sep 8 2009, 8:49 PM

kcrane: I’m a little late getting started. I wanted to share that I’ve been putting the labels on the inside of the front cover of the students’ notebooks. When I have a conference with a child, we just look on the inside cover for the labels.

Sep 8 2009, 8:49 PM

heather_adkins: that makes sense…that way they have a record of it, too.

Sep 8 2009, 8:50 PM

frazierje: I think that is important - they need to have documentation

Sep 8 2009, 8:50 PM

kcrane: I have a wonderful group.

Sep 8 2009, 8:51 PM

heather_adkins: 4th grade?

Sep 8 2009, 8:51 PM

asakich: I like that too. I’ve tried out the sticky note ideas from our managing the paper load discussion.

Sep 8 2009, 8:51 PM

frazierje: I like being able to tell the kids to go back to where we conferenced -

Sep 8 2009, 8:51 PM

frazierje: Kim, I have been tying in reading with writing - daily 5

Sep 8 2009, 8:53 PM

mchenryj: Jennifer, do you find that works well for you?

Sep 8 2009, 8:53 PM

kcrane: I teach third grade. Did you implement Daily 5 last year? I also do reading and writing during Daily 5.

Sep 8 2009, 8:53 PM

frazierje: Something else - I have my kids “get the trash out” at the beginning of class. They know it may be good stuff or real trash - so they may clear their thoughts. got it from a book

Sep 8 2009, 8:53 PM

mchenryj: I have read about combining read/writing conferences. Makes sense to me

Sep 8 2009, 8:53 PM

heather_adkins: I have been really focused on our memoir unit, but now that they are reading novels of choice I want the writing to be more choice oriented as well. NOt sure where we

Sep 8 2009, 8:54 PM

frazierje: Kim, you turned me on to Daily 5.

Sep 8 2009, 8:54 PM

heather_adkins: ….are headed next

Sep 8 2009, 8:54 PM

asakich: Hi Mac!

Sep 8 2009, 8:54 PM

heather_adkins: What is the daily 5?

Sep 8 2009, 8:54 PM

frazierje: I need to think about units. I have been allowing free choice of writing genre. I suppose it is time to direct

Sep 8 2009, 8:54 PM

mrmac1313: MAC SAYS HI

Sep 8 2009, 8:55 PM

frazierje: Hi Mac

Sep 8 2009, 8:55 PM

mchenryj: Hi Mac

Sep 8 2009, 8:55 PM

mrmac1313: HOW IS EVERYONE

Sep 8 2009, 8:55 PM

kcrane: I think I enjoy it more each year. I heard that the Sisters are coming out with a Daily 4 book, I think it’s 4, for math.

Sep 8 2009, 8:55 PM

heather_adkins: wonderful…how’s your year going, Mac?

Sep 8 2009, 8:55 PM

asakich: I’m allowing free choice as well. I think it’s part of launching the workshop for me. I want them to build stamina and experience writing before I give them a task.

Sep 8 2009, 8:56 PM

frazierje: So when do we start requiring a certain genre?

Sep 8 2009, 8:56 PM

frazierje: Kim, I don’t teach math this year. I am loving it!

Sep 8 2009, 8:56 PM

mrmac1313: I AM REALLY ENJOYING THIS YEAR . I HAVE SWITCHED FROM CDC TO EXTENDED RESOURCE SO MUCH MORE WRITING

Sep 8 2009, 8:57 PM

heather_adkins: Well, if you want to move toward poetry, for example, start using poetry for read alouds and QWs. They can still go back to all their topics from earlier.

Sep 8 2009, 8:58 PM

frazierje: Makes sense, we did that today. Mac, I have a wonderful inclusion block in the morning.

Sep 8 2009, 8:58 PM

frazierje: I have a genre wall, as well.

Sep 8 2009, 8:58 PM

mrmac1313: WE HAVE BEEN WRITING ABOUT 1969. MOON AND WOODSTOCK

Sep 8 2009, 8:59 PM

asakich: Where do you begin with WW Mac?

Sep 8 2009, 8:59 PM

heather_adkins: I bet that takes some research!

Sep 8 2009, 8:59 PM

frazierje: mac, where do you teach?

Sep 8 2009, 8:59 PM

mrmac1313: SMITH COUNTY HIGH IN CARTHAGE

Sep 8 2009, 9:00 PM

mrmac1313: THIS IS SO COOL

Sep 8 2009, 9:00 PM

frazierje: Yes, it is

Sep 8 2009, 9:00 PM

heather_adkins: the writing or the chatting?

Sep 8 2009, 9:00 PM

mrmac1313: I MISSED THE OPENING OF THIS DISCUSSION

Sep 8 2009, 9:01 PM

mchenryj: I have enjoyed chatting with you all. I have to go get some sub plans together for tomorrow. I have no voice and don’t think I can teach 23 students without a voice tomorrow! LOL

Sep 8 2009, 9:01 PM

heather_adkins: I’m going to post the transcripts of the entire chat tomorrow.

Sep 8 2009, 9:01 PM

mrmac1313: GO DAWGS JILL

Sep 8 2009, 9:01 PM

frazierje: Feel better and be in touch

Sep 8 2009, 9:01 PM

asakich: Thanks, Jill for joining us!

Sep 8 2009, 9:01 PM

heather_adkins: bye Jill! Hope to see you at the conference,

Sep 8 2009, 9:01 PM

heather_adkins: Oh, and email me that template if you don’t mind.

Sep 8 2009, 9:01 PM

asakich: Hope you feel better!

Sep 8 2009, 9:02 PM

asakich: I’ve been wondering about when to start writing with the kids. Mine need a lot of guidance in the beginning. Did you start writing with them from the get go?

Sep 8 2009, 9:02 PM

mchenryj: Go DAWGS! Thanks everyone!Heather-I’ll email that to you

Sep 8 2009, 9:02 PM

frazierje: I love the chatting with teachers. We need to support and talk about what is going on in our classrooms.

Sep 8 2009, 9:03 PM

mrmac1313: WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DISCUSSING TONIGHT

Sep 8 2009, 9:03 PM

heather_adkins: Allison, do youmean like a shared writing?

Sep 8 2009, 9:03 PM

kcrane: Heather, During Daily 5 students can Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Words, Work on Writing, or Listen to Reading. It’s a wonderful way to manage students while they practice/apply literacy skills. The teacher is free to work with groups or hold conferences.

Sep 8 2009, 9:04 PM

asakich: I meant writing in your own notebook. Shared writing is something I need to do often with the kids in the beginnin.

Sep 8 2009, 9:05 PM

heather_adkins: I like that, Kim. Figuring out this whole readers workshop has been fun but frustrating. Writer’s Workshop I can do…reading not so much. I need to look into that more. It sounds like a good way to manage the hybrid I’m trying to develop.

Sep 8 2009, 9:05 PM

asakich: Kim, is there a book you use for Daily 5? It sounds great for 2nd grade.

Sep 8 2009, 9:05 PM

frazierje: I do the quick writes when they are writing. I conference when they write after the mini-lesson. I also have shared my thoughts I may write at home. It has encouraged some to write at home - more goosebump moments.

Sep 8 2009, 9:06 PM

heather_adkins: Oohh…you mean like Allison writing with the kids. I think it’s okay if you don;t always. There are things you have to do that they don’t.

Sep 8 2009, 9:07 PM

heather_adkins: Sometimes I do a QW though and then join one of the groups for a table share.

Sep 8 2009, 9:07 PM

frazierje: yep, like take a temperature.

Sep 8 2009, 9:08 PM

asakich: True. I just feel like I’m all management right now. It’s a learning curve though. I want to jump into craft and convention and writing beautiful words, when my kids need to work on listening, sharing, and who are writers in the early stages.

Sep 8 2009, 9:08 PM

frazierje: Oh, I need to have table shares

Sep 8 2009, 9:08 PM

asakich: What are table shares?

Sep 8 2009, 9:09 PM

frazierje: Did you say 2nd grade? I think you have to get all the procedure stuff mastered first.

Sep 8 2009, 9:09 PM

asakich: Yep. That’s why it’s the third week of school and I’m just getting to the writing part…

Sep 8 2009, 9:09 PM

heather_adkins: I have my desks arranged in tables. They share at their tables and then select one person’s to share with the whole class.

Sep 8 2009, 9:10 PM

frazierje: I think that is great. Three weeks is nothing if it will allow you to have a successful year.

Sep 8 2009, 9:10 PM

kcrane: The book is called The Daily 5. If you really truly follow the book, you will appreciate the independence your students will achieve.

Sep 8 2009, 9:10 PM

asakich: Ah! Makes since - like think-pair-share in early grades.

Sep 8 2009, 9:11 PM

heather_adkins: Thanks, Kim. I’ll have to look into it.

Sep 8 2009, 9:11 PM

frazierje: I like the idea of only sharing a sentence or a few lines, too

Sep 8 2009, 9:11 PM

heather_adkins: Well, ladies, I still have some plannning to do for tomorrow. This was wonderful!!

Sep 8 2009, 9:12 PM

asakich: Thanks Heather! Have a great evening.

Sep 8 2009, 9:12 PM

heather_adkins: Hope to see everyone next weekend at the conference.

Sep 8 2009, 9:12 PM

heather_adkins: Allison, I’ll be in touch about this weekend.

Sep 8 2009, 9:12 PM

asakich: Sounds good!

Sep 8 2009, 9:13 PM

frazierje: Sounds great! THank you for the evening.

Sep 8 2009, 9:13 PM

kcrane: To all-Have a great week.

Sep 8 2009, 9:13 PM

asakich: Kim do you have any other topics you’d like to dicuss?

Sep 8 2009, 9:14 PM

asakich: I think it’s been a great chat and I appreciate you logging in with us tonight!

Sep 8 2009, 9:15 PM

kcrane: Thanks,have a nice evening.

Sep 8 2009, 9:15 PM

asakich: You too!
